Introduction
Counter mats and desk mats are often confused — and it's understandable. Both are flat, both are branded, and both sit on a horizontal surface. But they serve very different purposes, are made from different materials, and are used in completely different environments. If you're trying to decide which one is right for your business, this guide will clear it up.
What Is a Counter Mat?
A counter mat is a branded mat designed for high-traffic public-facing surfaces — think bank teller counters, retail point-of-sale counters, reception desks, and trade show tables. They're built to withstand constant handling by multiple people throughout the day.
Counter mats in South Africa are most commonly produced using high-frequency PVC welding — a manufacturing process that heat-seals multiple layers of PVC together around the edges, fully encapsulating the printed insert inside. The result is a waterproof, wipe-clean, extremely durable mat that can take years of heavy use without deteriorating.

Typical uses for counter mats:
Bank and financial services teller counters
Retail point-of-sale counters
Reception and front-desk surfaces
Trade show and exhibition tables
Pharmacy and medical practice counters
Standard counter mat sizes:
A4 (210mm x 297mm) — most common for teller and retail counters
A3 (297mm x 420mm) — commonly used at tellers and retail counters
A2 (420mm x 594mm) — larger format for reception desks and exhibition tables
Custom sizes available on request
What Is a Desk Mat?
A desk mat is a larger format mat designed for a single user's personal workspace. It typically covers a significant portion of the desk surface, protecting it from scratches while providing a consistent, comfortable surface for both mouse and keyboard use.
Desk mats are a premium branded product — because of their size, they offer a much larger branding canvas than a standard mousepad. A well-designed desk mat dominates the workspace visually, making it one of the most impactful branded desk accessories available.
At Gecko Media, our TechniMat product is specifically designed for large-format desk mats. The surface is UV printed in full colour and precision-cut using a Zünd flatbed cutter — giving sharp, accurate edges in any shape or size.
Typical uses for desk mats:
Executive and corporate gifting
Office rollouts and staff welcome packs
Large-format brand presence on individual desks
Premium conference and event giveaways
Common desk mat sizes:
600mm x 350mm — standard desktop coverage
800mm x 400mm — full keyboard and mouse coverage
Custom sizes and shapes available via TechniMat
